Like the original Nautoscaph these pieces feature a unidirectional steel bezel with a blue ceramic insert. Being unidirectional removes the risk of it being accidentally turned while underwater, which could result in a fatal miscalculation of dive time. It is manufactured and tested to withstand the pressure of depths of 999ft (300m or 29atm). The original Nautoscaph had 999ft on its dial, a touch we loved and therefore kept. We have outfitted these styles with our hand made brown, Italian leather strap with bronze buckle.

As with all of Alsta Nautoscaph releases, Alsta make all possible technical, safety and performance improvements while retaining as much of the original designs as possible. Your beautifully-styled Alsta timepieces ooze the same romance and charm as the originals. The main differences being; modern-day materials and technology. Like the originals, they are powered by quality automatic Seiko NH35A, 24 jewels movement.

Alsta – Nautoscaph IV – Tropic (Limited Edition)

The Alsta Nautoscaph was first released in 1970 and was immortalized by the 1975 blockbuster movie JAWS. Alsta is proud to announce a faithful re-edition of the watch worn by Oceanographer Matt Hooper, played by Richard Dreyfuss, in the movie. The Nautoscaph IV will be limited to 400 pieces worldwide. It is manufactured and assembled entirely in Switzerland except for the movement which is by Seiko of Japan.

When avid motorcyclist, veteran watch journalist, and Beyond The Dial Co-Founder, Allen Farmelo, began pairing watches with his motorcycles and posting images on Instagram, Alsta’s CEO Angus MacFadyen reached out. A week later, the Motoscaphe was in the works. Farmelo says that he has had “about 30 years to dream up this watch, because I’ve literally been thinking about the perfect motorcycle watch for about that long.”

Motorcycle watches have almost always been cheap, flimsy things with a brand logo thoughtlessly slapped on the dial. The Alsta Motoscaphe carries no specific motorcycle branding, is built to the highest mechanical standards, and will reliably serve its owner and their heirs for generations to come.

Also setting the Alsta Motoscaphe apart is a unique feature set aimed at motorcyclists of all kinds, including a left-handed crown to eliminate digging into a bent wrist, a useful 12-hour GMT rotating bezel, ultra-clear legibility with anti-reflective coating, and an aesthetic that’s equally at home on a Harley bagger, a Ducati Panigale, a bobbed cafe racer, or a muddy adventure bike like the BMW GS.

Another rugged outdoors timepiece that was inspired by the original Surf n Ski. This was targeted at the wrists of the glamorous ski crowds of Aspen and St Moritz and the Californian surf scene. Alsta attention to detail in recreating the Surf n Ski as close to the original as possible was uncompromising. The Alsta Surf n Ski is an outdoor watch that is styled to be worn on any occasion. It is even made to be used as a dive watch and therefore has a unidirectional bezel which removes the risk of it being accidentally turned while underwater which could result in a fatal miscalculation of dive time. The original Surf n Ski was made waterproof to 666ft however, tempting as it was to recreate that wonderfully eccentric 666ft, Alsta decided to manufacture and test the new Surf n Ski to withstand the pressure of depths of 999ft which is 300m or 29 atm, the same as the Nautoscaph. The Surf n Ski is manufactured and tested to be anti-magnetic to a field strength of 4,800 A/m (ISO 764 compliant) and shock-resistant to ISO 1413 standard which should be sufficient for knocks endured on the snow, the ice, or the waves
